The APEX 12166 is a round steel file designed for shaping, smoothing, and enlarging holes, slots, and curved surfaces in metal, wood, and plastic. It features a second-cut tooth pattern, which delivers a medium rate of material removal with a moderately smooth finish — suited for general-purpose filing tasks where a balance of speed and surface quality is needed. The file measures 12 inches in length with a 0.5-inch diameter and tapers slightly toward the point for access to tighter work areas. It is used by HVAC technicians, pipefitters, electricians, plumbers, and general maintenance trades.
This file is well suited for deburring pipe ends, opening conduit knockouts, cleaning up drilled holes, and fitting mechanical components. The round profile makes it the right choice for curved or circular surfaces that flat or half-round files cannot reach effectively. The single-cut tooth pattern runs in one direction across the face, producing a cleaner surface finish compared to a double-cut file at the same cut grade. At 0.55 pounds, it is light enough for extended hand use on the job site or in the shop.
Designed as a general-purpose round file compatible with standard file handles accepting a 0.5-inch diameter tang-style file. Suitable for use across trade applications including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical maintenance work.
Round files should always be fitted with an appropriate handle before use to prevent hand injury from the tang. Secure the workpiece in a vise or clamp before filing to maintain control and accuracy. Apply consistent forward pressure on the cutting stroke and lift or ease pressure on the return stroke to preserve tooth life. Inspect teeth periodically and use a file card or brush to clear metal filings and prevent pinning.
