The AO SMITH 100271569 is a sacrificial anode rod designed to protect the interior of compatible water heater tanks from corrosion. Made from an aluminum and zinc alloy, the rod works through electrochemical action, corroding in place of the tank lining to extend service life. It measures 33 inches in length and connects via a 3/4 inch NPT hex-end fitting, making it a straightforward drop-in replacement for water heater service work. Licensed plumbers and water heater technicians install this rod as part of routine preventive maintenance or when the original rod has been depleted.
This anode rod is used in residential water heater applications where the original sacrificial rod has corroded beyond effective use. Replacing a depleted anode rod is one of the most cost-effective steps a technician can take to extend tank life and prevent premature liner failure. The aluminum-zinc composition is particularly suited for areas with soft or treated water where magnesium anodes may cause sulfur odor issues.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement sacrificial anode rod for compatible AO SMITH residential water heater tanks with a 3/4 inch NPT anode port.
Installation is performed by a licensed plumber or qualified water heater technician. Before servicing, shut off the cold water supply and power or gas to the unit, and relieve tank pressure at the T and P valve. A 1-1/16 inch socket and breaker bar or impact wrench are typically required to remove and install the hex-end fitting. Apply thread sealant tape rated for potable water systems to the NPT threads before installation.
