The AO SMITH 100108571 is a magnesium-free aluminum/zinc sacrificial anode rod designed to protect the inner lining of residential storage water heaters from corrosion. At 42 inches in length with a 3/4-inch hex connection, this rod threads directly into the water heater tank and undergoes controlled electrochemical oxidation in place of the tank wall. It is also formulated to reduce hydrogen sulfide odor, commonly experienced as a rotten egg smell, that can develop in water heater tanks with certain water chemistries. Licensed plumbers and water heater service technicians are the typical installers.
This anode rod is used in residential water heater applications where the existing magnesium anode has depleted or where sulfur odor problems require a switch to an aluminum/zinc alloy formulation. The 42-inch length suits standard tall tank configurations. The 3/4-inch hex end allows installation using a standard socket wrench. It is sold as a direct replacement part for water heaters originally equipped with a comparable anode rod of the same connection size and length.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement anode rod for residential storage water heaters equipped with a 3/4-inch hex anode port accepting a 42-inch rod.
Installation is typically performed by a licensed plumber. Before servicing, shut off the cold water supply and power or gas to the water heater, and relieve tank pressure at the temperature-pressure relief valve. A 1-1/16-inch or 1-1/8-inch socket with a breaker bar is commonly required to break loose the existing anode rod. Apply thread sealant tape to the hex fitting threads before installing the replacement rod and tighten to snug — do not overtighten, as tank threads can be damaged.
