The AMTROL AMTR-ST-5 is a thermal expansion tank for domestic hot water systems. It absorbs the pressure increase caused by thermal expansion when water is heated, protecting system components from overpressure damage. Rated to 150 psi maximum working pressure and a maximum temperature of 200 degrees F, this 2-gallon steel tank uses a factory-precharged air bladder to buffer volumetric expansion. It connects via a 3/4 inch threaded fitting and is sized for typical residential water heater installations. Licensed plumbers and mechanical contractors are the primary installers of this component.
This expansion tank is designed for closed domestic hot water systems that incorporate a backflow preventer, a check valve, or a pressure reducing valve on the cold water supply. These devices create a closed system in which heated water has no path back to the municipal supply, making an expansion tank a code-required component in most jurisdictions. The AMTR-ST-5 is suited for residential and light commercial potable water heating applications where a compact, low-volume buffer tank is appropriate.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and new-installation expansion tank for closed domestic hot water systems requiring a 2-gallon, 3/4 inch threaded expansion vessel rated to 150 psi.
Installation should be performed by a licensed plumber in accordance with applicable local plumbing codes and the International Plumbing Code (IPC). Shut off the cold water supply and relieve system pressure before installing or replacing the tank. Verify the factory air precharge pressure matches the static supply pressure at the installation point before connecting the tank. Do not exceed the rated working pressure or temperature limits of the tank.
