The ALLIED MACHINE AND ENGINEERING 455H-0229 is a spade drill insert engineered for high-performance hole-making in demanding metalworking applications. Manufactured from cobalt, this insert measures 2-29/32 inches in diameter and features a 144-degree point angle for aggressive, accurate entry into tough workpiece materials. It belongs to the GEN2 T-A series and carries an AM200 PVD coating that extends tool life by reducing friction and heat buildup during cutting. The insert is 0.4375 inches thick and fits Seat Size 5 holders. It is intended for installation by machinists and toolroom technicians working in production or job-shop environments.
This insert is suited for drilling into steel, stainless steel, cast iron, super-alloys, titanium, and hard materials. The GEN2 T-A platform is designed for indexable spade drilling operations where consistent geometry and repeatable performance are required across medium-to-large diameter hole sizes. The 144-degree point angle reduces thrust and improves chip formation when entering difficult-to-machine alloys. It is commonly used in vertical machining centers, horizontal mills, and lathe drilling operations where coolant-fed toolholders are employed.
Designed for use with Seat Size 5 GEN2 T-A spade drill holders. Compatible workpiece materials include steel (P), stainless steel (M), cast iron (K), super-alloys and titanium (S), and hard materials (H) per ISO material classification codes provided in the product data.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. Before indexing or replacing the insert, ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the tool is secured in a vise or holder. Use the appropriate torque wrench and insert screw specified by the holder manufacturer — do not overtighten, as this can damage the insert seat. Verify insert seating and runout before returning the holder to service.
