The ALLIED MACHINE AND ENGINEERING 438T-0412 is a high speed steel spade drill insert designed for heavy-duty drilling operations in metalworking applications. Part of the GEN2 T-A series, this insert measures 4-3/8 inches in diameter and fits a Seat Size 8 holder. It carries a TiN (titanium nitride) PVD coating applied over an M4 material grade high speed steel substrate, providing increased surface hardness and extended edge life compared to uncoated tooling. The insert features a 144-degree point angle suited to a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Weighing 0.1 pounds, it installs directly into compatible T-A series spade drill bodies used across production and maintenance drilling environments.
This insert is intended for use in industrial drilling operations where large-diameter hole making is required. It is compatible with Seat Size 8 GEN2 T-A series spade drill holders and is rated for primary workpiece materials including steel, cast iron, and non-ferrous metals. Typical applications include structural fabrication, heavy manufacturing, and job-shop drilling on vertical mills, radial arm drills, and CNC machining centers. The TiN coating makes it particularly suitable for production runs in steel and cast iron where tool life and chip control are priorities.
Designed for use with Seat Size 8 GEN2 T-A series spade drill bodies. Compatible primary workpiece materials include steel (P), cast iron (K), and non-ferrous metals (N) per ISO material classification codes.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician familiar with indexable spade drill systems. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before changing inserts. Seat the insert firmly and evenly into the holder pocket and secure with the appropriate fastener to the holder manufacturer torque specification. Inspect the seating surface for chips or debris before each insert change to prevent premature wear or runout.
