The ALLIED MACHINE AND ENGINEERING 22040S-004I is an indexable spade drill designed for high-productivity hole-making in a wide range of workpiece materials. Part of the T-A 4 series, it accepts interchangeable spade drill inserts and features a straight flute configuration with a 4MT taper shank for direct spindle mounting on compatible machines. The drill covers a diameter range of 1-29/32 inches to 2-9/16 inches with a maximum drilling depth of 5-1/8 inches. Through-coolant delivery via dual radial entry ports keeps cutting temperatures in check and aids chip evacuation. This tool is installed and operated by machinists and toolroom professionals in production and job-shop environments.
The 22040S-004I is suited for general-purpose drilling operations across a broad spectrum of materials including steel, cast iron, aluminum, non-ferrous alloys, and superalloys, consistent with the universal workpiece material designation. Its short-series body length makes it a practical choice for vertical machining centers, horizontal mills, and drill presses equipped with a 4MT taper spindle socket. The through-coolant system supports higher feed rates and longer insert life compared to flood-only setups, making this drill well-suited to medium-to-high-volume production runs where cycle time and tool longevity matter.
Designed for use with T-A 4 series indexable spade drill inserts. Compatible with the 2T-4SR rotary coolant adapter. Fits any machine spindle or toolholder accepting a 4MT (Number 4 Morse Taper) shank. Workpiece material compatibility codes H, K, M, N, P, and S cover a universal range of materials.
Machinist or toolroom personnel should install this drill body into a clean, burr-free 4MT spindle socket and verify seating before operation. Power down and lock out the machine before mounting or removing the drill body or changing spade inserts. Confirm coolant port connections are properly threaded and sealed before enabling through-coolant flow. Follow the machine tool manufacturer and insert manufacturer feed and speed recommendations for the specific workpiece material being drilled.
