The ALLIED MACHINE AND ENGINEERING 18ZA-0016 is a spade drill insert designed for high-performance hole-making operations in demanding machining environments. Part of the T-A Series, this insert measures 0.5 inches in diameter and seats in a Seat Size Z holder. It is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiAlN PVD coating applied via physical vapor deposition, which extends tool life when drilling abrasive and hard workpiece materials. The 132-degree point angle is suited for flat-bottom entry and consistent chip formation. Machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and production operators install this insert as a direct replacement in compatible T-A Series spade drill bodies.
This insert is intended for use in metalworking and machining applications across a broad range of workpiece materials. It is rated for use in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, super-alloys, titanium, and hard materials, covering ISO material groups P, M, K, S, and H. Typical install scenarios include CNC machining centers, lathes, and drill presses where replaceable spade drill inserts reduce tooling cost versus solid carbide drills. The cobalt substrate combined with TiAlN coating makes this insert especially well suited for interrupted cuts and materials with high work-hardening tendencies.
Designed for use with ALLIED MACHINE AND ENGINEERING T-A Series spade drill holders that accept a Seat Size Z insert. Confirm holder seat size and diameter designation before ordering.
Insert replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician with the machine powered down and locked out per OSHA lockout/tagout procedures. Use the appropriate insert wrench or torque key specified by the holder manufacturer to seat the insert correctly — do not over-torque or substitute tools. Inspect the holder seat for wear or damage before installing a new insert, as a damaged seat will reduce tool life and dimensional accuracy. Follow the tool manufacturer's recommended speeds and feeds for the workpiece material being drilled.
