The ALLIED MACHINE AND ENGINEERING 181N-0028 is a cobalt spade drill insert designed for high-performance hole-making in demanding materials. Part of the T-A Series, this insert features a 132-degree point angle and a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating applied via physical vapor deposition (PVD). The 7/8 inch diameter and Seat Size 1 designation make it a direct fit for compatible T-A Series spade drill holders. The TiCN coating increases surface hardness and reduces friction, extending tool life in abrasive and tough-to-machine workpiece materials. At 0.1563 inches thick, the insert provides a rigid cutting geometry suited to production and job-shop drilling operations.
This insert is intended for use in metal-cutting applications across a range of workpiece materials, including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, super-alloys, titanium, and hard materials. It is suited for CNC machining centers, lathes with live tooling, and dedicated drill presses where a T-A Series spade drill holder with a Seat Size 1 bore is already in use. Typical end users include machinists, toolroom technicians, and production drilling operations requiring a reliable, coated cobalt insert for interrupted or continuous-cut hole-making.
Designed for use with T-A Series spade drill holders requiring a Seat Size 1 insert. Compatible workpiece materials include steel (P), stainless steel (M), cast iron (K), super-alloys and titanium (S), and hard materials (H) per ISO material classification codes provided in the product data.
Installation is performed by a machinist or toolroom technician. Always ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in a locked-out, de-energized state before seating or removing the insert. Inspect the holder seat for chips or debris before installation, as contamination can affect insert seating and runout. Follow the holder manufacturer's torque specifications for the clamping screw — do not over-torque, as this can damage the insert or seat.
