The ACCUPRO T2640263 is a spiral point tap designed for threading 6-40 unified fine (UNF) holes in steel workpieces. Also called a gun tap, the spiral point pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting action, making it well suited for through-hole tapping operations where chip evacuation is critical. This tap is manufactured from 3 percent vanadium high speed steel (HSS) for improved wear resistance and toughness compared to standard M2 HSS. It carries a bright finish with no coating, an H3 thread limit for standard tolerance fitment, and a right-hand thread direction. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals use it in CNC machining centers, turret lathes, and manual drill press setups.
The T2640263 is intended for tapping through holes in steels, including low-carbon, medium-carbon, and alloy steel stock. The plug chamfer style — approximately 3 to 5 lead threads — provides a gradual cutting entry appropriate for most general-purpose through-hole applications. With an overall length of 2 inches and a thread length of approximately 0.51 inches (13 mm), this tap fits standard tap holders and floating tap collets used in production and maintenance machining environments. The 3-flute geometry balances chip room with tool rigidity at this small thread diameter.
Designed for through-hole tapping in steels using standard tap holders, floating collets, and tapping chucks that accept the 3.58 mm shank diameter of a 6-40 size tap.
Tapping operations should be performed by a qualified machinist following proper workholding and speeds-and-feeds practices for the material being tapped. Always use an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound when threading steel to extend tool life and protect thread quality. Secure the workpiece fully before engaging the tap to prevent deflection or tap breakage. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear before each use; a broken tap in a workpiece can be difficult to remove without damaging the part.
