The ACCUPRO 18550-01C is a thread forming tap designed for M8x1.25 metric coarse threading in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps cold-form the material to create threads without producing chips, making them well suited for ductile metals where clean, strong threads are required. This tap is manufactured from powdered metal high speed steel and finished with a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating, which increases surface hardness and reduces friction during the forming process. With a bottoming chamfer of 2.5 threads, it can tap close to the bottom of a blind hole. The thread limit is D9, and the class of fit is 6H. Machinists and tool and die technicians are the primary installers of this tap in production and maintenance machining environments.
This tap is used in blind hole threading operations on ductile workpiece materials such as aluminum, mild steel, and similar alloys where chipless thread forming is preferred. The bottoming chamfer style allows threading to within a minimal distance from the hole bottom, which is critical in applications with tight depth requirements. It is appropriate for CNC machining centers, drill presses, and manual tapping applications where right-hand metric threads are required. The 6H class of fit makes it suitable for standard metric fastener engagement in both production runs and repair work.

Thread forming taps require a different pilot hole diameter than cutting taps - consult a thread forming tap drill chart for the correct forming hole size before drilling. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is properly aligned with the hole axis before beginning the tapping cycle to prevent tap breakage. Use a suitable tapping fluid or lubricant rated for the workpiece material to extend tap life and improve thread quality. Always follow machine shop safety practices, including proper RPM selection for the material and tap size.
