The ACCUPRO 17947-01C is a thread forming tap designed for M4x0.70 metric coarse threading in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, this forming tap displaces material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. Manufactured from powdered metal high speed steel and finished with a TiCN (titanium carbonitride) coating, it delivers extended tool life in demanding production environments. The bottoming chamfer style allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole, making it well suited for tight-tolerance work. At 2.125 inches overall length with a 0.168-inch shank diameter, it fits standard tap holders for M4 metric work.
This tap is intended for use in blind hole threading operations in ferrous and non-ferrous metals where metric M4x0.70 threads are required. The bottoming chamfer with 2.5 chamfered threads allows the tap to reach near the floor of a stopped bore. It is commonly used in precision machining, toolroom work, and production environments where thread strength and surface finish are critical. The right-hand thread direction and 6H class of fit make it a standard choice for general metric assembly applications. A single oil groove supports lubrication during the forming process.

Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut tap pilot hole for the same thread size — consult a metric forming tap drill chart before use. Apply a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material before and during the operation. Secure the tap in a rigid holder to maintain alignment and avoid tap breakage in small-diameter applications. Never back the tap out without releasing any bind, as M4 taps are susceptible to breakage under side load.
