The ACCUPRO 17566-01C is a thread forming tap designed for cutting M3x0.50 metric coarse internal threads in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than remove chips, producing stronger threads with no swarf in the hole. This tap is manufactured from powdered metal high-speed steel (PM-HSS) and coated with titanium carbonitride (TiCN) for improved wear resistance and surface hardness. The bottoming chamfer style allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. It carries a 6H class of fit with a D5 thread limit, making it suitable for standard tolerance metric threaded assemblies in production and maintenance environments.
The 17566-01C is used in blind hole threading operations on ferrous and non-ferrous metals where chip evacuation is a concern or where thread strength requirements favor a formed thread. The bottoming chamfer, at 2.5 threads, allows the tap to engage near the base of shallow blind holes. With an overall length of 1.9375 inches (49.21 mm) and a thread length of 0.625 inches, this tap is sized for use in standard tap handles, tapping heads, or CNC machining centers. It is suited for machine shops, maintenance facilities, and precision manufacturing environments.
Designed as a standard M3x0.50 metric coarse thread forming tap compatible with blind hole threading operations requiring a 6H class of fit. Fits standard tap holders sized for a 0.141-inch shank diameter and a 0.110-inch square drive.
Thread forming taps require a specific forming tap drill size, which is larger than the equivalent cutting tap drill size for the same thread — consult a metric thread forming tap drill chart for M3x0.50 before drilling. Use an appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for thread forming on the workpiece material. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping and ensure the tap is driven axially straight to avoid thread distortion or tap breakage. In CNC applications, verify spindle speed and feed rate are set for thread forming, not thread cutting.
