The ACCUPRO 12185-01T is a thread forming tap designed for cutting 10-32 UNF internal threads in blind holes. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than removing chips, producing stronger threads with a smoother finish. This tap is manufactured from powdered metal high-speed steel and features a titanium nitride (TiN) coating that reduces friction and extends tool life. With a bottoming chamfer of 2.5 threads, it is built to form threads close to the bottom of a blind hole. It is suited for use by machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians working in production or repair environments.
This tap is used for blind hole threading applications where a full thread depth close to the hole bottom is required. The bottoming chamfer design allows threading to within a minimal distance of the hole bottom, making it appropriate for tight-tolerance assemblies. It performs well in ductile metals such as aluminum, mild steel, and similar machinable alloys where material displacement is viable. It is a right-hand tap and requires a corresponding right-hand tapping operation. Technicians should select the correct drill size for thread forming per the tap manufacturer or standard references, as forming taps require a larger pilot hole than cutting taps for the same thread size.
Designed for forming 10-32 UNF right-hand internal threads in blind holes in ductile materials. Suitable for use with standard tapping chucks, CNC tapping heads, and hand tap wrenches that accept a 0.194-inch shank diameter.
Thread forming taps must be used with the correct drill size for forming, which is larger than the drill size used for cutting taps of the same thread designation — consult a standard tap drill chart for forming taps before use. A quality cutting fluid or tapping lubricant appropriate for the workpiece material should be applied to reduce heat and extend tap life. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping to prevent movement. When using a hand tap wrench, apply steady, consistent pressure and back off periodically to distribute lubrication evenly through the oil groove.
