The ABB 820-D is a pre-galvanized steel old work box support designed to secure switch boxes in existing wall cavities without requiring access from inside the wall. It functions as a mounting holder that braces electrical boxes firmly against the interior wall surface during retrofit and remodel installations. The 820-D accommodates walls up to 1.5 inches thick, making it suitable for a range of standard drywall and plaster wall assemblies. Electricians and experienced DIYers install this support when adding new switch or device boxes to finished walls where a stud is not accessible at the desired location.
This box support is used in residential and light commercial retrofit wiring projects where cutting a new box opening into an existing finished wall is required. It is particularly useful during remodel work, room additions, and outlet or switch relocation jobs. The old work design eliminates the need to open the wall cavity from both sides, speeding up installation in occupied spaces. It is appropriate for use with standard single-gang switch boxes in drywall and similar wall board assemblies.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement bracket for standard single-gang switch box installations in old work and retrofit residential or light commercial wiring applications.
Installation should be performed by a licensed electrician in accordance with applicable NEC requirements. De-energize the circuit at the breaker panel and verify absence of voltage before beginning work. The support is inserted through the cut wall opening and positioned to clamp against the wall surface once the box is seated. Do not exceed the rated maximum wall thickness of 1.5 inches.
