The ABB 4CA is a Type CA aluminum split bolt connector designed for splicing and tapping copper and aluminum conductors in electrical installations. The connector includes a spacer and washer to maintain proper conductor separation and ensure a secure, low-resistance mechanical connection. Rated for equal main and tap configurations with a conductor range of 2 solid through 4 solid, this fitting is suited for distribution wiring tasks where mixed-metal conductor compatibility is required. Licensed electricians install this type of connector during service entrance, feeder, and branch circuit work.
The 4CA is appropriate for residential and light commercial electrical work where copper-to-aluminum or aluminum-to-aluminum conductor connections must be made at junction points, pull boxes, or service enclosures. The included spacer prevents conductor contact outside the connector body, which is critical when joining dissimilar metals. It is a field-installed fitting used in conduit systems, meter bases, and similar enclosures where code-compliant splicing is required.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard installation fitting for use with copper and aluminum conductors in the 2 solid through 4 solid range in residential and commercial electrical systems.
Installation should be performed by a licensed electrician in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC). De-energize and lock out the circuit before making any connections. Apply appropriate anti-oxidant compound when joining aluminum conductors to copper to prevent galvanic corrosion at the connection point. Tighten the bolt to the connector manufacturer's standard practice for the conductor size; do not over-torque, which can deform the conductor strands.
