The A.Y. McDonald 5421-106 is a 1-inch lead-free swing check valve designed to prevent backflow in potable water and plumbing systems. The sweat (solder) end connection provides a permanent, leak-resistant joint suited for copper pipe installations. Rated at 125 PSI, this valve uses a swinging disc mechanism that opens under forward flow and closes automatically when flow stops or reverses. At 0.82 pounds, it is compact and straightforward to integrate into residential or light commercial plumbing lines. Licensed plumbers install this type of valve where backflow prevention is required without the complexity of a full backflow preventer assembly.
This swing check valve is suited for potable water supply lines, recirculation systems, and general plumbing applications where reverse flow could cause contamination or equipment damage. The sweat connection makes it a direct fit for copper piping systems commonly found in residential construction and light commercial mechanical rooms. Its lead-free construction meets requirements for use on drinking water systems under applicable NSF and state plumbing codes.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or new-installation swing check valve for 1-inch copper sweat potable water and plumbing systems rated to 125 PSI.
Installation should be performed by a licensed plumber in accordance with local plumbing codes and the International Plumbing Code (IPC). Shut off the water supply and depressurize the line before soldering. Observe the flow-direction arrow marked on the valve body and orient accordingly — installing the valve backwards will prevent forward flow entirely. Allow solder joints to cool completely before restoring system pressure.
