The A.Y. MCDONALD 5420-301 is a lead free bronze hydrant elbow designed for use in potable water distribution and yard hydrant installations. This fitting transitions from a 1-inch insert connection to a 3/4-inch male pipe thread (MPT), allowing a direct, reliable connection between poly or PEX supply lines and the threaded inlet of a yard hydrant body. Cast from lead free bronze, it meets federal and state lead free requirements for potable water contact. Plumbers and waterworks contractors install this elbow during new hydrant installations or service replacements where directional routing of the supply line is required.
This hydrant elbow is suited for residential and light commercial yard hydrant applications. It is typically installed underground at the base of a yard hydrant where the horizontal supply line must transition upward into the hydrant standpipe. The insert end accepts barbed fittings for polyethylene or PEX pipe, while the MPT end threads directly into the hydrant inlet port. It is appropriate for cold water service lines in direct-bury conditions when paired with approved clamps or crimp rings.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or new-installation fitting for yard hydrant assemblies requiring a 1-inch insert to 3/4-inch MPT elbow transition in lead free bronze.
Installation should be performed by a licensed plumber in accordance with local plumbing codes and IPC guidelines. Shut off the water supply and relieve line pressure before disassembling any hydrant fittings. Use appropriate barb clamps or crimp rings on the insert end rated for the pipe type and working pressure. Apply thread sealant or PTFE tape to the MPT connection and tighten to hand-snug plus wrench-tight without over-torquing the bronze threads.
