The 3M 7100178224 is a coated fiber disc in the Cubitron II 987C series, engineered for medium to heavy-duty grinding and weld finishing applications. At 9.125 inches in diameter with an 80-grit abrasive and a maximum speed rating of 6600 RPM, it uses 3M Precision-Shaped Grain technology to deliver a high cut rate under reduced grinding pressure. A stiff fiber backing and strong resin bond provide tear resistance in demanding environments. A built-in grinding aid helps manage heat at the workpiece surface, making this disc well suited for heat-sensitive alloys and high-pressure weld grinding or beveling operations.
This disc is intended for use in fabrication shops, metal service centers, and industrial manufacturing environments where consistent stock removal on steel, stainless steel, and similar alloys is required. It is suited to both operator-guided angle grinders and pressure-assisted or robotic grinding setups. Typical applications include weld seam removal, surface conditioning, and bevel preparation on structural and sheet metal components. Fewer disc changes per shift make it practical in high-volume production lines where downtime directly affects throughput.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use coated fiber disc for large-diameter angle grinders and pressure-assisted grinding equipment rated for 9.125-inch discs at or below 6600 RPM.
This disc is installed by grinding professionals and fabrication technicians using appropriate large-diameter angle grinder or robotic grinding equipment. Always confirm the tool spindle speed does not exceed the disc maximum speed rating of 6600 RPM before mounting. Inspect the disc for damage before each use and discard any disc that shows tears, fraying, or delamination. Personal protective equipment including a face shield, gloves, and hearing protection should be worn in accordance with applicable ANSI and OSHA standards for abrasive grinding operations.
