The 3M 7100175088 is an insulation displacement connector (IDC) designed for tap and run wire splicing without stripping or cutting the run wire. The connector accepts a tap wire alongside a run wire, making solid or permanent mid-run connections on copper conductors. It accommodates 10 AWG solid or stranded wire on the run and 12 AWG solid or stranded wire on the tap. The yellow color coding identifies the wire gauge range at a glance. Each connector uses a piercing IDC termination method that bites through insulation to establish a reliable electrical contact. This pack contains 50 connectors. Electricians and low-voltage installers use these in residential and light commercial wiring applications.
These connectors are suited for branch circuit tap connections, fixture wiring, and control wiring in residential and light commercial settings. The IDC termination method eliminates the need for soldering or wire-nut joints at tap points, which is useful when adding a branch to an existing run without breaking continuity. Installation should be performed by a licensed electrician in accordance with applicable NEC requirements for the circuit type and environment. De-energize the circuit at the breaker and verify absence of voltage with a meter before making any connections. The connector is seated using a connector installation tool or lineman pliers until the cap fully closes and the IDC contacts pierce the insulation. Do not reuse a connector that has been fully seated, as the IDC contacts are single-use by design.
