The 3M 7100166940 is an insulation displacement connector (IDC) designed to electrically join a tap wire end to a through run wire without stripping insulation. Sold individually, this connector is rated for 12 AWG solid or stranded wire and 10 AWG stranded wire. The flame-retardant housing is color-coded yellow for fast field identification. Maximum insulation outside diameter is 0.190 inches, and the connector is rated for continuous operation up to 221 degrees F (105 degrees C). Electricians and low-voltage technicians use these connectors to make reliable, insulated splices in branch circuit and control wiring applications.
This connector is suited for residential and light commercial electrical installations where a secure tap or run splice is needed without cutting or stripping the through wire. Typical applications include junction box wiring, tap connections off main runs, and splice points in control or signal wiring. The suggested application tool is the E-9BM Crimping Tool, which seats the connector and completes the insulation displacement in a single operation.
Compatible with 12 AWG solid or stranded conductors and 10 AWG stranded conductors. Recommended for use with the 3M E-9BM Crimping Tool to ensure a proper insulation displacement connection.
Installation should be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with applicable NEC requirements. De-energize and lock out the circuit before making any splice connections. Use the E-9BM Crimping Tool or an equivalent IDC application tool rated for this connector series — hand-pressing without the proper tool may result in an incomplete or unreliable connection. Verify wire gauge compatibility before crimping, as mismatched gauges can compromise the splice integrity.
