The 3M 7100160279 is a sanding screen disc designed for finish sanding and scuff sanding applications in woodworking and surface preparation work. The disc uses silicon carbide abrasive bonded to an open mesh substrate. That open mesh construction reduces loading, meaning swarf and dust pass through rather than clogging the abrasive surface. The result is a more consistent cut throughout the life of the disc. At 100 grit, it sits in the fine abrasive range, suited for removing raised wood grain after a first finish coat or scuffing between finish coats to promote adhesion.
This disc is intended for use in the final stages of wood surface preparation, specifically removing raised grain that appears after a water-based stain or sealer is applied. It is also used between finish coats to degloss the surface and improve intercoat adhesion. Typical applications include furniture finishing, cabinetry, flooring prep, and interior millwork. Finish carpenters, cabinet shops, and professional painters are the primary users. The open mesh design makes it well suited for situations where a conventional sandpaper disc would load quickly.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement disc for floor sanders and disc sanders accepting a 7.875-inch sanding screen format.
Secure the disc firmly to the sanding pad before operation and ensure the pad backing is in good condition to provide even support across the mesh surface. Power down and unplug the sander before mounting or removing the disc. Allow the finish coat to cure fully per the finish manufacturer guidance before scuff sanding. Wear appropriate respiratory protection when sanding finished surfaces.
