The 3M 7100117173 is a Trizact 217EA coated abrasive belt engineered for intermediate finishing and fine polishing applications in metal fabrication and surface prep workflows. It uses 3M proprietary microreplication technology in which micron-graded aluminum oxide particles are formed into precision pyramids and bonded to a JE-weight rayon cloth backing. As the pyramids wear down during use, fresh, sharp mineral is continuously exposed, delivering a consistent cut rate and predictable finish throughout the full life of the belt. The belt measures 132 inches in length and 2 inches in width. It is installed by metalworkers, fabricators, and finishing technicians on stationary and portable belt grinding equipment.
This belt is suited for intermediate finishing and fine polishing operations performed prior to plating or buffing on metal workpieces. The flexible JE-weight rayon backing conforms to contoured and curved surfaces, making it well-suited for complex part geometries. It performs reliably under light contact pressure conditions, allowing the abrasive mineral structure to break down at a controlled rate for consistent surface finish results. Its predictable wear characteristics also make it a strong fit for automated and robotic finishing lines where repeatability is critical.
Designed for use on belt grinders and finishing machines that accept a 132-inch by 2-inch abrasive belt. Suitable for metal fabrication, pre-plate finishing, and fine polishing operations across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous workpieces.
Installation should be performed by a qualified metalworking or finishing technician following the belt grinder manufacturer's instructions. Disconnect and lock out power to the machine before changing the belt. Verify belt tracking alignment before resuming operation, and confirm the machine's rated speed is appropriate for the belt dimensions. Inspect the belt for damage or improper seating before powering the unit on.
