The 3M 7100048870 is a 6-inch hook and loop non-woven abrasive disc designed for surface conditioning, light deburring, cleaning, and finishing on metal, composites, and painted surfaces. The disc uses aluminum oxide abrasive in a very fine grade, making it well suited for final-stage surface prep and blending work. At 12,000 RPM maximum speed, it runs on standard right-angle grinders and disc sanders equipped with a hook and loop backing pad. The flexible non-woven construction conforms to contoured surfaces, maintaining consistent abrasive contact without aggressive material removal. Weighing 0.03 pounds, it is a single-disc unit sold individually.
This disc is a fit for trades and shop environments requiring controlled surface finishing rather than aggressive stock removal. Common applications include weld blending, rust and oxidation removal, paint scuffing between coats, and pre-inspection cleaning on fabricated metal assemblies. The maroon color and very fine aluminum oxide formulation are consistent with the 3M 7447 series, which is widely used in HVAC fabrication shops, plumbing rough-in work involving copper and steel pipe prep, and general light industrial maintenance where a clean, scratch-free finish is required before assembly or coating.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement abrasive disc for use with hook and loop backing pads accepting 6-inch discs, rated for use up to 12,000 RPM on angle grinders, orbital sanders, and disc sanders used in metal, composite, and surface conditioning applications.
Installation requires a compatible hook and loop backing pad mounted on a grinder or sander rated for the disc diameter and RPM. Confirm the tool RPM does not exceed the 12,000 RPM disc rating before use. Secure the disc firmly to the backing pad before powering on the tool, and inspect the disc for tears or separation before each use. Follow applicable shop safety protocols including eye and hand protection when operating abrasive tools.
