The 3M 7010508205 is a coated abrasive spiral band designed for drum sanding applications in metalworking, woodworking, and general fabrication environments. Built with aluminum oxide abrasive grain on an X-weight cloth backing, this band delivers aggressive stock removal at 36 grit, placing it firmly in the very coarse grade range. The X-weight cloth backing provides the rigidity and durability needed for high-pressure sanding passes on contoured or cylindrical surfaces. Typically installed on rubber expansion drums, spiral bands like this one are standard consumables for HVAC fab shops, pipe fitters, and metal fabricators who need fast material removal on inside diameters and curved profiles.
This spiral band is suited for use on both handheld drum sanders and bench-mounted spindle setups. At 1 inch in diameter and 2 inches wide, it fits compact rubber drum mandrels commonly used for deburring, shaping, and surface prep on pipe ends, tube stock, metal brackets, and wood components. Very coarse 36-grit cuts quickly through weld scale, rust, paint, and raw metal or wood stock, making it a practical choice for rough-in and prep work in trade and light industrial settings.
Designed as a replacement-style coated abrasive spiral band for use with rubber expansion drum mandrels accepting 1 inch diameter by 2 inch wide bands.
Installation is performed by stretching the spiral band over an appropriately sized rubber expansion drum mandrel and securing it by expanding the drum via the arbor mechanism. Ensure the sanding tool is powered off and unplugged before mounting or removing bands. Inspect the rubber drum for cracking or wear before each use, as a damaged drum can cause uneven band seating and premature failure. Follow applicable shop safety practices including eye protection and dust control when operating abrasive tooling.
