The 3M 7010398980 is a polyolefin heat shrink sleeve designed for protecting, insulating, and sealing wire terminations and cable splices in electrical and low-voltage wiring applications. Starting at 1 inch inside diameter before shrinking, this sleeve recovers to 0.32 inches ID at a 3:1 shrink ratio, providing a tight, secure fit over conductors ranging from 4 AWG to 4/0 AWG. At 6 inches in overall length, the sleeve delivers substantial coverage per section. Licensed electricians and electrical contractors are the primary installers, though it also sees use in marine, industrial, and HVAC control wiring environments where moisture, corrosion, and fluid exposure are concerns.
This sleeve is suited for residential and commercial electrical work where reliable insulation and environmental protection are required at wire ends, lugs, and butt splices. Its rated operating range of -67 degrees F to 230 degrees F makes it appropriate for both indoor and outdoor installations including conduit entry points, panel terminations, and service entrance connections where conductors in the 4 AWG to 4/0 AWG range are common. The red color aids in circuit identification during installation and service.
Designed as a standard heat shrink sleeve for copper and aluminum conductors from 4 AWG to 4/0 AWG. Suitable for use wherever a 3:1 polyolefin heat shrink sleeve is specified for wire termination, splice protection, or cable bundling applications.
Installation is performed by licensed electricians in accordance with applicable NEC requirements. De-energize and lock out all circuits before applying heat shrink sleeves to any conductors or terminations. Apply heat evenly using a calibrated heat gun, working from the center of the sleeve outward to prevent air pockets and ensure uniform recovery. Avoid open-flame tools, which can scorch the material or cause uneven shrinkage.
