The 3M 7010297809 is a black 15 mil cotton friction tape designed for abrasion protection in electrical wire and cable work. Built from high-grade cotton, it withstands temperatures up to 176 degrees F (80 degrees C), making it suitable for demanding service environments. The tape is used primarily as an overwrap to shield splices and connections from mechanical damage. Electricians and cable technicians reach for this tape when standard vinyl tape is not enough and a durable, conformable wrap is needed. Each roll measures 0.75 inches wide by 82.5 feet long.
This tape is commonly used in residential, commercial, and industrial electrical installations wherever wire splices or cable terminations require added mechanical protection. It serves as an overwrap layer applied over primary insulation tape in splice kits, conduit work, and cable tray applications. The cotton construction conforms well to irregular surfaces, filling voids and gripping underlying layers without adhesive slippage. It is well suited to hand-applied wrapping on conductors, bus insulation, and multi-conductor cable assemblies where abrasion resistance is the primary concern.
Designed as an OEM-style overwrap friction tape for use in residential, commercial, and industrial wire and cable splice protection applications where a conformable cotton friction tape is required.
Installation is typically performed by a licensed electrician following applicable NEC requirements for splice protection and insulation integrity. De-energize and lock out the circuit before working on any splice or termination. Apply the tape with a half-lapped wrap pattern to ensure full coverage and consistent thickness over the splice area. Do not stretch the tape beyond its natural conforming tension, as overtensioning can thin the 15 mil stock and reduce abrasion protection.
