The 3M 7000138429 is a wraparound heat shrink cable repair sleeve rated for use on medium-voltage cable systems from 1 to 35 kV. It is designed to repair damaged cable sheaths and provides a watertight, mechanically protective barrier once heat is applied. The inner wall is coated with hot melt adhesive that bonds directly to the cable surface, creating a sealed, corrosion-resistant closure. A metal clip holds the wraparound sleeve closed during installation. Licensed electricians and cable splicing technicians install this sleeve in underground, direct-buried, and conduit-routed medium-voltage cable applications.
This sleeve is suited for medium-voltage cable sheath repair across residential, commercial, and industrial distribution systems. It is also used at cable joints and as supplemental corrosion protection on undamaged cable runs exposed to harsh or chemically aggressive environments. Its wraparound design allows installation without access to a free cable end, making it practical for in-place repairs on energized-circuit segments after the circuit has been de-energized and locked out.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and repair solution for medium-voltage cable sheaths rated 1 to 35 kV, including cable joint applications where wraparound heat shrink protection is specified.
Installation must be performed by a qualified electrician or certified cable splicer following applicable NESC and local electrical codes. De-energize, isolate, and lock out the circuit before beginning any cable sheath repair work. Apply heat evenly along the sleeve using a propane or hot-air torch, working from the center outward toward each end to prevent air entrapment under the adhesive layer. Do not overheat any single area, as uneven shrinkage can compromise the watertight seal.
