The 3M 7000138420 is a wraparound heat shrink cable repair sleeve rated for 15 to 35 kV applications. It is engineered to repair damaged cable sheaths on medium-voltage power cables and can also serve as supplemental corrosion protection on undamaged cables or as an outer covering for cable joints. The inner wall is coated with a hot-melt adhesive that activates when heat is applied, forming a watertight, mechanically secure bond. A corrosion-resistant metal closure clip secures the wraparound seam. Installation does not require cable end access, making it practical for in-place repairs on installed runs. Licensed electricians and cable splicing technicians are the typical installers.
This sleeve is suited for medium-voltage cable systems operating between 15 and 35 kV in both utility and industrial environments. It performs in aggressive outdoor and underground conditions where mechanical stress, moisture ingress, and corrosion are concerns. Typical use cases include sheath repairs on damaged distribution cables, transition protection at cable joints, and corrosion barrier reinforcement on exposed cable sections. It is sold individually and is appropriate for both planned maintenance and emergency field repair scenarios.
Designed as an OEM-style repair solution for medium-voltage power cables rated between 15 and 35 kV, including damaged cable sheaths, cable joints, and undamaged cables requiring additional corrosion protection.
Installation should be performed by a qualified electrician or certified cable splicing technician following applicable NFPA 70 (NEC) requirements and the utility or facility safety plan for medium-voltage work. De-energize, isolate, and verify absence of voltage on the cable before beginning any repair work. Apply heat evenly along the sleeve using an appropriate propane or butane torch, working from the center outward to activate the adhesive and achieve a uniform seal. Do not overheat any single area, and confirm the metal closure clip is fully engaged before applying heat.
