The 3M 7000118397 is a coated abrasive belt designed for stock removal and metal finishing in demanding shop environments. It combines 3M ceramic abrasive grain with aluminum oxide in a blend that cuts faster and lasts longer than conventional aluminum oxide belts. The heavyweight polyester cloth backing handles high-pressure applications without breaking down, and the belt can be run dry or with lubricant depending on the material and machine setup. A built-in grinding aid reduces heat buildup during stainless steel work, and a durable resin bond resists heat deterioration to extend belt life. Fabricators, weld finishers, and metalworking shops are the primary users of this product.
This belt is suited for grinding, blending, and finishing operations on metal surfaces, including heat-sensitive alloys and stainless steel. At 80 grit, it sits in the medium-coarse range, making it effective for aggressive stock removal while still leaving a workable surface finish. It performs on belt grinders and similar power-driven finishing equipment in fabrication shops, maintenance facilities, and light industrial environments. The orange color coding aids in quick grit identification during belt changes.
Designed for use on belt grinders and power finishing equipment where 12 inch by 1/2 inch coated abrasive belts are specified. Suitable for ferrous metals, stainless steel, and heat-sensitive alloys.
Install with belt travel direction aligned to the arrow marked on the backing where present, as reversed running can cause premature joint failure. Confirm the drive and idler wheels are properly tensioned and tracking before full-pressure operation. When running with lubricant, use a fluid appropriate for the workpiece material and ensure the machine is rated for wet operation. Inspect the belt splice before each use and replace any belt showing fraying, separation, or backing damage.
