The 3M 7000059397 is a one-part, ready-to-use intumescent moldable putty stick engineered to firestop through-penetrations and blank openings in fire-rated assemblies. Sold individually, this dark red putty stick measures 1.45 inches by 6 inches and weighs 0.55 pounds. It requires no mixing and is re-enterable, meaning it can be removed and reapplied during rework or inspection. When exposed to heat, the intumescent material expands to seal openings and block the passage of fire, smoke, and noxious gases. Licensed contractors and fire-stop specialty installers apply it where cables, conduit, pipes, or other penetrations pass through rated wall or floor assemblies.
This putty stick is suited for residential and commercial construction and renovation projects where fire-rated assemblies require sealing at through-penetrations or blank openings. It is commonly used to fill voids in large openings and complex firestop systems. Beyond fire resistance, the material provides airborne sound reduction properties, making it applicable in assemblies that require an STC rating. It also functions as a draft and cold smoke seal in systems requiring an L-Rating, adding multi-hazard protection in a single product.
Designed for use in fire-rated wall and floor assemblies where through-penetrations or blank openings require intumescent firestop treatment per applicable building and life safety codes.
Installation should be performed by a licensed contractor or certified firestop installer in accordance with the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and applicable codes including IBC and NFPA standards. De-energize any electrical systems and ensure the work area is safe before beginning penetration sealing work. Form the putty by hand to the required shape and press firmly into the opening, following the tested system design for the specific assembly. Do not substitute materials or dimensions that deviate from the evaluated firestop system listing.
