The 3M 7000049898 is a multi-layered, conformable foil tape engineered for cryogenic and low-temperature vapor barrier applications. It features an aluminum foil core laminated between two layers of 0.5 mil polyester film, creating a zero-permeable barrier that seals joints and seams against vapor infiltration. A cold-weather pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesive bonds reliably at temperatures well below freezing, making this tape suitable for refrigeration piping, chilled water systems, and cryogenic insulation work where standard tapes fail. HVAC and mechanical insulation contractors are the primary installers.
This tape is designed for vapor barrier joint closure on insulated piping, duct systems, and equipment operating at low or cryogenic temperatures. Its flexible backing conforms to irregular, curved, and contoured surfaces, allowing clean application over fittings, elbows, and transitions. The polyester film on both sides of the aluminum foil laminate resists pinhole formation, maintaining the integrity of the vapor barrier over time in demanding environments. Typical installations include commercial refrigeration, industrial process piping insulation, and mechanical room chilled-water systems.
Designed as an OEM-style vapor barrier closure tape for use on insulated refrigeration piping, cryogenic systems, and low-temperature mechanical insulation assemblies where a zero-permeable seal is required.
Installation is typically performed by licensed mechanical or refrigeration contractors. Surfaces should be clean, dry, and free of oils or frost before application. Apply firm, even pressure across the full tape width to ensure full adhesive contact, particularly on curved surfaces. Follow applicable mechanical codes and insulation manufacturer guidelines for overlap and coverage at joints and seams.
