The 3M 7000048733 is a UHMW polyethylene film tape designed for noise reduction, vibration damping, and surface protection in demanding industrial and mechanical applications. It features a translucent 10.0 mil UHMW polyethylene backing bonded to a rubber adhesive on a paper liner, delivering a low coefficient of friction alongside strong abrasion resistance. At 11.7 mil total thickness, this is the thickest version in the 542X tape family, making it the right choice where heavier wear resistance is the priority. The roll measures 24 inches wide by 36 yards long and ships at 18.95 pounds. Technicians across mechanical, HVAC, and manufacturing trades reach for this tape when a durable, slick surface barrier is needed.
This tape is well suited for applications where metal, plastic, or composite surfaces experience repeated contact, sliding friction, or vibration-induced noise. Common uses include lining chutes, slides, wear strips, guides, and conveyor components. It also sees use in HVAC installations for isolating vibrating panels, duct liner protection, and equipment mounting surfaces where abrasion and noise are ongoing concerns. The wide 24-inch format reduces seams on large surface coverage jobs. Its translucent appearance keeps underlying surfaces visible after application.
Designed as a heavier-duty alternative to 3M UHMW Film Tape 5421, suited for applications requiring greater abrasion resistance on metal, plastic, and composite surfaces in industrial and mechanical service environments.
Surface preparation is critical — clean and dry the substrate thoroughly before application to ensure full adhesive contact. Apply firm, even pressure across the tape face using a roller or squeegee to seat the adhesive and eliminate air pockets. In HVAC or mechanical enclosures, power down equipment before applying tape near moving components or electrical panels. Trim with a sharp utility knife for clean edges; avoid stretching the tape during application as it may affect long-term adhesion.
