The 3M 7000044821 is a precision lapping disc engineered for micro-abrasive finishing applications demanding consistent, repeatable results. The disc uses aluminum oxide mineral coated onto a durable 3 mil polyester film substrate and is bonded with a harder resin system for extended service life. A pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) backing allows fast, tool-free mounting to compatible backup pads. Available across seven grades ranging from 0.05 to 60.0 micron, this disc delivers controlled cut rates suited to tight-tolerance surface finishing work carried out by optical technicians, precision grinding specialists, and surface finishing operators.
Primary applications include fiber optic connector end-face finishing and roll superfinishing operations where surface geometry and finish consistency are critical. The tight particle size distribution across the abrasive coating ensures uniform material removal and predictable finish values from disc to disc. The 10 inch diameter format fits standard lapping fixtures and backup pads used in production and service environments. The polyester film backing resists tearing and dimensional distortion under normal lapping loads, maintaining flat contact throughout the cut.
Designed for use in fiber optic finishing and roll superfinishing applications; suitable for standard lapping fixtures and PSA-compatible backup pads that accept a 10 inch diameter disc.
Mount the disc onto a clean, dry, flat backup pad by aligning and pressing firmly from the center outward to eliminate air pockets beneath the PSA layer. Ensure the lapping fixture is stopped and de-energized before disc changes. Inspect the backup pad surface for debris or adhesive buildup that could cause uneven contact. Follow the equipment manufacturer's recommended speed ratings and do not exceed the rated RPM for the disc diameter in use.
