The 3M 7000044801 is a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) backed lapping film sheet engineered for precision surface finishing and polishing applications. The abrasive layer consists of aluminum oxide mineral bonded to a 3 mil polyester film substrate using a durable resin system. At 12.0 micron grade, this sheet delivers controlled material removal suited to fine finishing stages where surface quality and dimensional accuracy are critical. Sheets measure 8.5 inches x 11 inches and are sold individually. Technicians in fiber optic connector finishing, roll superfinishing, and related precision machining operations rely on this film for consistent, repeatable results.
This lapping film is commonly used in fiber optic finishing to polish ferrules and connectors to low-insertion-loss tolerances. It also sees regular use in roll superfinishing operations where tight surface finish specifications must be maintained. The PSA backing allows the sheet to be mounted securely to flat platens or backing plates without slipping during the polishing stroke. The 12.0 micron grade positions this sheet in the mid-range of the 266X series, which spans seven grades from 0.05 micron to 60.0 micron, making it suitable for intermediate stock removal before transitioning to finer finishing grades.
Designed for use in precision lapping and polishing applications including fiber optic connector finishing and roll superfinishing; compatible with flat platen lapping fixtures that accept PSA-backed sheet abrasives.
This film is applied by trade technicians and precision finishing specialists. Before mounting, ensure the platen or backing surface is clean and free of debris to achieve full PSA contact and prevent sheet movement. Peel and apply the PSA-backed sheet firmly to the work surface, smoothing from the center outward to eliminate air pockets. Follow the equipment manufacturer guidelines and any applicable workplace safety procedures when operating lapping machinery.
