The 3M 7000029144 is a UHMW polyethylene film tape designed to reduce noise, dampen vibration, and resist abrasion in demanding mechanical and industrial applications. It features a translucent 10.0 mil ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene backing bonded with a rubber-based adhesive and supplied on a paper liner. At 11.7 mil total thickness, this is the thickest configuration in the 3M 5423 series, delivering greater abrasion resistance than the thinner 5421 variant. The low coefficient of friction surface allows mating components to slide against one another with minimal wear, making it well suited for wear pads, guides, and noise-isolation applications.
This tape is used across a wide range of trade and industrial settings where surfaces experience repeated contact, sliding friction, or vibration-induced noise. HVAC technicians use it to isolate sheet metal panels, ductwork, and fan housings that rattle or abrade against adjacent surfaces. It also sees use in equipment assembly, conveyor guides, drawer slides, and any surface requiring a durable low-friction interface. Each roll measures 3/4 inch wide by 18 yards long, making it practical for targeted application on tight clearances and edges.
Designed as a direct replacement and thicker-profile alternative to 3M Tape 5421, and suited for general-purpose noise, vibration, and abrasion control applications on metal, plastic, and composite surfaces.
Surface preparation is critical — clean the substrate thoroughly with an appropriate solvent to remove oils, dust, and residue before applying the tape. Apply firm, even pressure across the full tape length using a roller or similar tool to maximize adhesive contact. In HVAC and sheet metal work, ensure mating panel edges are deburred to prevent backing puncture. Minimum application temperature should be observed per standard pressure-sensitive adhesive guidelines; consult 3M product data for temperature range confirmation.
