The 3M 7000005879 is an insulation displacement connector (IDC) designed to electrically connect a tap wire end to a through run wire without pre-stripping either conductor. The connector is self-stripping and dual-element, accepting 18 to 14 AWG tap wire and 12 to 10 AWG run wire. The housing is flame retardant and brown in color, making polarity and gauge-range identification straightforward on the job. Maximum insulation O.D. is 0.145 inches on the tap side and 0.190 inches on the run side. Licensed electricians and low-voltage technicians install this connector in branch circuit tap splicing applications where a reliable, insulated inline connection is required.
This connector is suited for tap splicing in residential and commercial electrical installations where a branch wire must be connected to a continuous run wire. It operates at temperatures up to 221 degrees F (105 degrees C), making it appropriate for use in conduit runs, junction boxes, and other enclosed wiring environments. The suggested application tool is the E-9BM Crimping Tool. Sold in bins of 1000 units, this connector is stocked for volume service work and panel wiring tasks.
Designed for tap splicing applications using 18-14 AWG tap conductors and 12-10 AWG run conductors. Recommended application tool is the 3M E-9BM Crimping Tool.
Installation should be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with the NEC and applicable local codes. De-energize the circuit completely before making or inspecting any connections. Use the E-9BM Crimping Tool or an equivalent IDC tool to seat the connector fully — do not attempt to seat by hand pressure alone. Verify that conductor insulation O.D. falls within the specified maximums before terminating to ensure a gas-tight, insulated connection.
