The 3M 7000001581 is a gray PTFE extruded film tape with a silicone adhesive backing, designed for sealing, masking, and low-friction surface applications. At 6.5 mil thick, it is the heavier-gauge version of the 3M 5490 tape, offering added durability where a thicker film is required. The PTFE film surface is exceptionally slick, reducing friction on contact surfaces and resisting adhesion of most materials. The silicone adhesive provides a reliable bond while the tape resists curling during unwind, making it easier to apply cleanly in the field. Each roll measures 2 inches wide by 36 yards long and weighs 1.3 pounds.
This tape is used in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and industrial maintenance applications where chemical resistance, low friction, or high-temperature masking is needed. Typical uses include wrapping guide rails, lining chutes, masking surfaces during chemical exposure, and sealing applications that demand a non-stick, chemically resistant barrier. The silicone adhesive system performs in environments where standard acrylic or rubber adhesives fail due to heat or chemical contact.
Designed as a thicker-gauge alternative to 3M 5490 PTFE film tape, suitable for sealing, masking, and low-friction liner applications across HVAC, plumbing, and industrial maintenance trades.
This tape is applied by hand and requires no special tools beyond a tape dispenser or utility knife for clean cuts. Ensure the application surface is clean, dry, and free of oils or debris before applying for maximum adhesion. No power shutoff is required for most surface-lining or masking applications, though standard lockout procedures apply when working on energized or pressurized equipment. Avoid stretching the tape during application to maintain consistent film thickness and adhesion.
