The 3M 7000001224 is a silver aluminum constraining-layer damping foil tape designed to reduce structure-borne vibration on metal and plastic surfaces operating at or near their natural resonant frequency. The construction pairs a pressure-sensitive viscoelastic polymer with a rigid aluminum foil constraining layer, converting mechanical vibration energy into low-level heat. The tape ships on a poly-coated paper easy-release liner for clean, controlled application. At 15.0 mil total thickness, it delivers meaningful mass and stiffness to the constrained surface without adding bulk that would interfere with adjacent components. Technicians in HVAC, automotive, and industrial maintenance applications reach for this product when panel rattle or resonant drumming is the root problem.
This tape is well suited for deadening sheet-metal panels, ductwork walls, equipment enclosures, and plastic housings that vibrate at resonant frequencies during normal operation. It is commonly applied in commercial and residential HVAC systems to quiet fan housings, blower cabinets, and air-handler panels. Industrial maintenance crews use it on machinery covers and electrical enclosure panels. The 2-inch width and 36-yard roll length make it practical for covering larger surface areas without excessive splicing.
Designed for application on metal and plastic vibrating surfaces including sheet-metal ductwork panels, blower and fan housings, equipment enclosures, and similar components where resonant vibration damping is required.
Surface preparation is critical — clean the substrate free of oil, dust, and loose material before applying the tape to ensure full adhesive contact. Power down or de-energize any equipment before applying tape to internal panels or moving components. Cut to length with a straight-edge and utility knife; firm hand pressure or a roller applicator is recommended to maximize adhesive contact across the full tape width. Follow all applicable facility safety and lockout-tagout procedures before accessing enclosed equipment.
