The 3M 16848 is a deburring wheel mandrel designed to mount abrasive deburring wheels onto rotary tools, die grinders, and drill presses. It features a 0.25-inch shank diameter and a 3/16-inch wheel hole, making it compatible with a wide range of deburring wheel bores. The shank length of 1.5 inches provides adequate clearance for most tool chucks. Machinists, pipefitters, and fabrication technicians use this mandrel when finishing cut metal edges, removing burrs from drilled holes, and preparing pipe ends before assembly. It is a straightforward, single-piece mounting accessory that secures the wheel to the drive tool.
This mandrel is suited for light metal fabrication, plumbing rough-in work, and HVAC sheet metal applications where deburring is part of standard workflow. It accepts deburring wheels with a minimum wheel diameter of 1 inch up to a maximum of 2 inches, and a minimum wheel width of 0.125 inches up to a maximum of 0.5 inches. Trades that frequently work with copper tubing, conduit, and steel duct will find it a useful addition to a basic tool kit.
Designed as an OEM-style mandrel for use with abrasive deburring wheels that have a 3/16-inch bore, a wheel diameter between 1 and 2 inches, and a wheel width between 0.125 and 0.5 inches.
Installation is performed by machinists, pipefitters, or general fabricators using a standard rotary tool, die grinder, or drill press with a compatible chuck. Before mounting or removing the mandrel, ensure the tool is fully powered down and unplugged or the air supply is disconnected. Thread or press the deburring wheel onto the mandrel per the wheel manufacturer instructions, and verify the wheel is secure before operating at speed. Always wear appropriate eye protection when running abrasive wheels.
