The Square D B4.85 is a thermal unit designed to protect motors and branch circuit conductors from excessive heating caused by prolonged motor over-currents. This unit effectively trips in 20 seconds or less under overload conditions and has a one-piece construction, which enhances its durability. The motor current flows through a small heater winding, where heat generated from overload can cause a solder to melt, allowing a ratchet wheel to spin and open the control circuit.
